How to get the Albanian digital nomad residence permit: who qualifies, required documents, fees, timeline and the step-by-step process on e-Albania.

What is the Albania digital nomad visa? It is a residence permit called the Unique Permit for Digital Mobile Workers (in Albanian, Leje Unike për Punonjës Lëvizës Digjital). It lets people who work remotely for employers or clients outside Albania live in the country for up to one year, with the option to renew. You apply online through the government portal e-Albania. The rules come from Law No. 79/2021 “On Foreigners” and Council of Ministers Decision No. 858/2021.
Strictly speaking, it is a residence permit and not a classic visa. It is what you apply for when you want to stay longer than the visa-free tourist period.
Key facts at a glance
Length: up to 1 year on the first grant, renewable.
Official fee: ALL 4,500 for the first application and ALL 2,250 for renewal. The biometric card is charged separately.
Processing time: 4 to 12 weeks, according to the law.
Provisional permit: issued electronically within 5 days after your application is accepted.
Where to apply: online, on e-Albania.
What it covers: remote work for employers or clients outside Albania.
Who can apply?
Remote workers with income from abroad
The permit is designed for people who earn their income from outside Albania:
Freelancers and self-employed professionals with foreign clients.
Remote employees of foreign companies.
Business owners whose company is registered abroad and serves foreign clients.
Who the permit is not for
The law describes a digital mobile worker as a foreigner who works from different places, without a fixed office, mainly using technology. The permit is not meant for working for Albanian employers or clients. For that, you need a different type of Unique Permit, usually based on an employment contract.
Albania digital nomad visa requirements
The legal basis is Article 68 of Law No. 79/2021 and the procedure published by the Ministry of Interior. In practice, you should be ready to show the following.
Your work and income
Proof of remote work
You need to show that you work remotely for an employer or clients outside Albania. This is usually done with an employment contract or service agreements, together with invoices or bank statements.
Income
You must prove stable income that is enough to support yourself in Albania. Guides currently point to an amount close to the Albanian minimum wage, reported as about ALL 50,000 per month in 2026 (roughly €450 to €500). The exact figure can change, so confirm it in the e-Albania application before you pay for translations or legalizations.
Your stay in Albania
Accommodation
You must provide proof of accommodation and your address in Albania, such as a rental agreement or another document accepted by the migration office.
Health insurance
The law requires a valid health insurance policy for at least one year. Many guides mention coverage of about €30,000, but the law itself does not state an amount. Check what the migration office currently accepts.
Your personal documents
Passport and photo
Your passport must be valid for the period you request. The photo must be 47 mm x 36 mm, on a white background, taken in the last 6 months, facing the camera with a neutral expression and open eyes.
Criminal record certificate
You need a criminal record certificate from your country of origin. It must show whether or not you have a criminal record.
Documents issued outside Albania
Foreign documents must be translated into Albanian, issued within the last 6 months, and legalized according to international agreements. For most countries, that means an apostille. Ask the migration office how they want the apostille and the translation ordered before you start paying for them.
Do you need a visa to enter Albania?
Visa-free entry
It depends on your nationality. Citizens of many countries can enter Albania without a visa for a stay of up to 90 days. Others must apply for a long-stay visa (type D) before travelling. The list of countries is in the annexes of Decision No. 858/2021 and on the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs visa page.
Applying from inside Albania
The law allows you to apply for the Unique Permit from your country of residence or from inside Albania, as long as your stay is regular. If you entered visa-free as a tourist, you can start the process in Albania, but you must do it before your visa-free days run out.
How to apply, step by step
Before you apply
Gather your documents. Start with the criminal record certificate and the translations, because they take the longest.
Arrange proof of accommodation in Albania.
On e-Albania
Open the application through the official Unique Permit service.
Fill in the form and upload your documents. The application is submitted online, once.
Pay the fee and upload the payment receipt.
After you submit
Receive your provisional permit. It is electronic and issued within 5 days after the application is accepted.
Wait for the decision. It takes 4 to 12 weeks. If something is missing, the migration office emails you and you have 30 days to complete the file.
Complete the post-approval steps within 30 days (see below).
Collect your biometric residence card at the regional migration office.
How much does it cost?
Application fee: ALL 4,500 (renewal: ALL 2,250).
Biometric card: paid separately, at a bank in Albania, after approval.
Other costs: health insurance, criminal record certificate, apostille and sworn translation. These vary by country and provider.
Some websites list higher fees. Use the Ministry of Interior’s published fee as your reference.
How long does it take?
The law sets a review period of 4 to 12 weeks from the application date. You receive an electronic provisional permit within 5 days of acceptance. After approval, you have 30 days to finish the final steps, and the card is normally ready within two weeks after you complete them.
What happens after approval?
Within 30 days of approval, you need to:
Confirm your address at the local civil registry office.
Pay the biometric card fee at a second-tier bank in Albania.
Send your original documents and the signed application form by post to the regional migration office.
Visit the regional migration office in person for fingerprints and to hand in the payment receipt.
Common mistakes to avoid
Expired documents. A criminal record certificate older than 6 months will not be accepted.
Missing translation or legalization. This is one of the most common reasons for a request for more documents.
Waiting until the last day of your visa-free stay. Start early.
Weak proof of accommodation. Ask the migration office what they accept before you submit.
Presenting your work as local work. This permit is for remote work for clients outside Albania.
Is the Albanian digital nomad permit worth it?
When it fits
It is a good fit if you want to live in Albania legally for more than 90 days, you work for clients or an employer abroad, and you want a process that is handled online with a low government fee.
When it does not
It is less suitable if you plan to work for Albanian companies.
A note on taxes
Albania has specific provisions for digital nomads, and your tax situation also depends on your home country and where your company is registered. Talk to an accountant before you move.
